Un-retiring at 63: Returning to the Workforce Once More

Chong Khin Yong wanted to give back to the workforce while he was still able to, even after he retired. Find out why he choose to do so.

“Seeing my grandchildren through some of the important milestones of their childhood was something that brought me much joy in the two years of my retirement but it also didn’t feel like I was quite done with the working life yet.

I missed the sense of identity I forged over the 26-year course of my career in the IT sector. Being part of the workforce provided me an identity and purpose, and it also enabled me to contribute to the society in more meaningful ways. While I am still physically and mentally active, I decided to rejoin the workforce.

Eventually, I was offered a full-time position as an IT Consultant at Han’s (F&B) Pte Ltd through the Career Support Programme (CSP) by Workforce Singapore (WSG). It was a breath of fresh air to have people in a new environment appreciate the skill set I had brought along with me and acknowledging what I could bring to the table again.

I recommended the company to upgrade their enterprise resource planning (ERP) system to facilitate the overall management of orders at the back-end and urged management to also replace the existing point-of-sale (POS) system to something more up-to-date, less prone to breakdowns and able to analyse sales data.

There were many different ERP vendors to choose from in the market so I pointed out the key advantages and limitations of the respective vendors I’ve worked with over the years. This enabled the stakeholders to select a local vendor and system that best suited the company’s needs.

Knowing that I could lend support in my own way to help the company progress was something that energised me.

I look forward to helping Han’s with managing changes in the innovation transformation as we move towards digitising many of our processes. I also look forward to being a mentor to the younger members of my team.”

*With the announcement of the Jobs Growth Incentive (JGI), which took effect from Sep 2020, CSP has ceased with effect from 1 Sep 2020.
