The job market has been in a bit of flux this year due to economic and geopolitical headwinds, but thankfully, close to 60% of Singapore’s industries record ‘above average’ growth by Q3 2024, according to the Monetary of Singapore (MAS) in an October statement.
It is likely that the same variables that made some employers wary of increasing hiring and salaries in 2024 will remain the same leading into 2025. In the latest MAS survey of employer sentiment, the most probable outcome for 2025 growth fell between 2.5- 2.9%, similar to the previous survey.
Geopolitical tensions were cited as the top downside risk by 100% of respondents, from 66.7% in a September 2024 survey, given US President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to raise tariffs to as high as 20% on imports from around the world, with his presidency kicking off on Jan 20, 2025.
Weaker growth in China and domestic cost pressures were also raised as a potential drag on the economy in 2025.
Tough times means Singapore workers will get help to remain competitive
